2022 Sandsteen Cabernet Sauvignon

In the hot African sun stands a flowering bush of delicate pink protea. It's part of a unique eco-system of immense diversity, over 8000 species of which more than 6000 are endemic. Standing guard we have the mighty Cape Fold mountains. Giant gargoyles of hard sandstone that formed during the Permian era almost 300 million years ago. You can not help feeling humbled walking in this landscape. It's inspiring and beautiful. It's truly unique.
Making drawings and paintings of this landscape feels like therapy. I guess I try to capture what it is that inspires such awe every time I'm there. Is it the delicate balance of hard, rugged rock with soft tufts of fynbos leaves and flowers? The red colour of the iron oxide captured in the rock faces; or the change in perspective, standing on the top of a mountain, looking down, shifting the horizon of normality a few degrees.
Maybe the best thing to do is sit back with a glass of red wine, be quiet and just be in the moment.
The Sandsteen Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Simonsberg area in Stellenbosch. It’s all about bold, dark fruit flavors, think black cherries, berries, and plums, balanced by a fresh touch of acidity. After spending 18 months in French oak barrels (10% new), it picks up subtle cedar and spice notes. Made from grapes sourced from three different blocks on the estate, this wine is rich but refined, smooth yet full of character, and perfectly reflects its unique terroir.
